During the elves’ long absence, a small enclave of gnomes adopted this city. Yet instead of inhabiting the elegant, vacant buildings on the forest floor, the gnomes instead made their homes in the trees, crisscrossing them with zip lines, winch-and-basket arrangements, and windmills set at odd angles from the treeline. The gnomes seem impervious to suggestions that they might be trespassing – after all, they haven’t touched the elves’ buildings, but merely neighbor them from above – and their audacity and humor appeals to elven sensibilities. Since the Fair Ones hardly have the numbers to fill the cities they currently occupy, their leaders have seen fit to leave the gnomes as another, less formal investigation of co-habitation with non-elves. This experiment is not without occasional strain.
